Surface finish is an important factor in any stainless-steel standard, no matter what its intended application. In cases when appearance is critical, the finish is a design feature that has to be considered. Surface finishes for non-decorative purposes should be carefully selected and explicitly explained since they may have effects on friction, wear, maintenance, or corrosion resistance.
The surface finish is composed of three separate characteristics: roughness, layness, and waviness. Roughness is the most commonly defined surface finish feature.
